Growing up, the highly regarded works of Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit Ray took me to a city that seemed quite beyond the bounds of possibility to explore. From its mishti dois to Durga puja to Indian museum – Kolkata is considered as the “City of furious, creative energy”. Dating back to the 18thcentury, Calcutta was built by Job Charnock of the East India Company, although the city has been home to Indian settlements since decades. This capital of the West Bengal state still takes pride in its past – the plethora of hotels in Kolkata that exudes colonialism is a proof. Here are some hotels that are not only popular but are also some of the best hotels in central Kolkata.
Exhibiting two of my favorite things, Bodhi Tree is a culmination of Art and Travel created by two well-traversed individuals. Just like how the air feels in this boutique hotel, each of its space is tastefully revealed from an inspiration that manifests the serene mind of Buddha. It only sounds expensive in terms of its opulent quality but the rates are reasonable for guests with all budget preferences. The most interesting is the communal space that forms an art gallery, a garden and patio library as well as a café.
The Oberoi Grand
Back in the nineteenth century, the hotel was the private house of Colonel Grand, later converted to a boarding house, a part of which was used as a theater. The owner of the theater took over the boarding house and renovated the property into a modern hotel inviting many English tourists during the time. In 1939, the hotel was taken over by the Oberois. Built in colonial style, the hotel has won many prestigious awards and is no doubt one of the best hotels in Kolkata.
Step into history by staying at The Fairlawn that is brimming with stories from the past. Centrally located, all en-suite rooms are refurbished, while the garden area, dining hall and the upstairs lounge are a perfect place to unwind. With an on-site laundry service, wi-fi and air-conditioners in each room, the hotel is fairly priced – the package also includes breakfast.
Visitors looking for hotels near Kolkata Airport must stay at the luxurious Swissotel Kolkata. The highlight is the suite featuring large open-air terrace and an outdoor Jacuzzi. Apart from this, the hotel offers a variety of accommodation options – from the executive lounge to the classic rooms, each adorned with contemporary artworks by local artisans.
